Authorities stated Wednesday that Denver police checked the man’s well-being at the detention facility before he fled. The officers “investigated to the extent they were able without having full consent or sufficient evidence of a crime to support requesting a search warrant,” according to a police statement. The victim informed detectives that he escaped hours later and that the perpetrators had fled the scene following the welfare check.
Two of the victim’s roommates, Darwin Veliz-Gonzalez, 34, and Jose Pineda-Moreno, 19, were taken into custody by the police on October 18.
Among other things, both are accused of first-degree assault, which includes disfigurement and criminal extortion, and first-degree abduction, which provides for imprisonment or concealment with physical harm.
Investigators were still seeking two other suspects. Although they are currently investigating if the attack was tied to gangs, they think it was an “isolated incident.”
A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokeswoman refused to tell Fox News Digital if each suspect was a citizen. He stated that unless there is an “articulable indication that they may be noncitizens,” the government does not divulge an individual’s immigration history.
According to jail records, Pineda-Moreno is being detained on $100,000 bond, while Veliz-Gonzalez is being held on $510,000 bond. On Friday, both are expected to appear in court.
