Four of the institution’s students died over the weekend in an SUV crash that left them in flames, and the college in Maine was in mourning on Monday.
It happened early on Saturday in the little hamlet of Castine, just one day after the end of the fall semester’s sessions. State police are still looking into the wreck in which the students from Maine Maritime Academy were hurt.
Joshua Goncalves-Radding, 20, of North Babylon, New York, was the driver of a 2013 Range Rover that struck a tree and caught fire. Goncalves-Radding and two additional students made it through and were transferred to nearby hospitals.
“Be in mourning for these young men.” We will always remember them and this particular chapter in Maine Maritime Academy’s history. At a candlelight vigil on Sunday night, Jerry Paul, the school’s president, spoke. “Too quickly and before the end of their watch, they were lost.” When the time comes, we shall ring eight bells in their honor while continuing on in their place.
