Below we have a list of states with the most NCAAF teams to help you understand more about college football and hopefully find a team to follow near you! For this list, we have only included FBS football teams. FBS or Football Bowl Subdivision is considered the top flight of college football in America!

First up, we have the lone star state, which is home to a whopping 12 college football teams! Texas has 170 colleges and universities; it’s no wonder they have so many teams in their state! Texas is home to the following college football teams: 

  • Baylor Bears 
  • North Texas Mean Green 
  • Rice Owls 
  • Houston Cougars 
  • SMU Mustangs 
  • Texas A&M Aggies 
  • Texas Longhorns
  • TCU Horned Frogs 
  • Texas State Bobcats
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders 
  • UTEP Miners 
  • UTSA Roadrunners
  • Ohio

Next up, we have Ohio, home to an impressive eight college football teams! Ohio boasts 190 colleges, so it’s no wonder they have so many teams competing in the top leagues of college football! The eight teams in Ohio are as follows: 

  • Akron Zips
  • Cincinnati Bearcats
  • Bowling Green Falcons 
  • Kent State Golden Flashes
  • Miami (OH) RedHawks 
  • Ohio State Buckeyes 
  • Ohio Bobcats 
  • Toledo Rockets Toledo 
  • California 

Coming in third place is California, which has seven college football teams! With over 281 universities and colleges in California, seven have FBS football teams that attract a large fan base. Their teams are: 

  • UCLA Bruins 
  • California Golden Bears
  • Fresno State Bulldogs
  • San Diego State Aztecs 
  • San Jose State Spartans 
  • USC Trojans 
  • Stanford Cardinal 
  • Florida

Like California, Florida also has seven college football teams. Out of Florida’s 40 public colleges and universities, seven of them have football teams that have made it to the FBS. These teams are:

  • Florida Atlantic Owls 
  • Florida State Seminoles 
  • Florida Gators
  • FIU Panthers
  • Miami (FL) Hurricanes 
  • South Florida Bulls 
  • UCF Knights 
  • North Carolina 

North Carolina also has seven NCAAF teams! There are 149 colleges and universities across North Carolina, with seven football teams making it to the FBS! These teams are: 

  • Appalachian State Mountaineers 
  • Duke Blue Devils
  • Charlotte 49ers
  • East Carolina Pirates
  • North Carolina Tar Heels 
  • NC State Wolfpack 
  • Wake Forest Demon Deacons 
  • Louisiana 

Louisiana is home to five NCAAF teams! The state has 60 colleges and universities, with five of them having incredibly popular college football teams. Their teams attract crowds to their matches and have built a decent following over the years. The five teams in Louisiana are: 

  • LSU Tigers
  • Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 
  • Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 
  • Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns
  • Tulane Green Wave New Orleans 
  • Michigan 

Completing our list today is Michigan who also has five football teams. Out of Michigan’s 93 colleges and universities, five of which have football teams in the FBS. These teams needed to be some of the best out there to make the cut, so you can be sure to enjoy a match should you watch one of the following teams:

  • Michigan Wolverines 
  • Michigan State Spartans 
  • Central Michigan Chippewas 
  • Eastern Michigan Eagles 
  • Western Michigan Broncos 

The seven states included today all have the most FBS teams compared to other states.
