Former England international Michael Thomas has urged Liverpool to make three additional signings after completing the transfer of Darwin Nunez from Benfica.
Benfica confirmed earlier on Monday that they have agreed to €100 million transfer fees with Liverpool for Darwin Nunez. The Uruguay international is expected to have his medical today.
Thomas Michael believes Liverpool needs three additional signings this summer. that is two midfielders and sign another right back to compete with Trent Alexander Arnold.
According to the 54 years old, Kelvin Philips, and Jude Bellingham would be a good sign for the Reds.
Jurgen Klopp is reported to be an admirer of the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, with James Milner and Jordan Henderson aging, the signing of Bellingham as the replacement for the Liverpool duo but it seems Dortmund is not ready to sell the England international.
Kelvin Philips on the other hand, Liverpool might be late in the pursuit of the Leeds defensive midfielder as there are reports that Manchester City has agreed on personal terms with Kelvin Philips.
What did Michael Thomas say?
In an interview with CaughtOffside, The former Liverpool midfielder said: “Darwin Nunez has had a really good season for Benfica and all the top teams are looking at him.
“He will be a great signing. After that, I think a backup at right-back would be good to fight with Trent Alexander-Arnold. Joe Gomez played well there when called upon, but I prefer him in the center.
“Kalvin Phillips could also be a good asset depending on the price. He’s surely not going to Manchester United so there might be an opportunity there. I also firmly believe Liverpool will be in for Jude Bellingham if the opportunity ever arises, though that will probably be one for next summer. I’d be very happy with Phillips or Bellingham for the midfield.”
Meanwhile, Paul Dickov has urged Liverpool to replace their aging Squad if they want to compete with Manchester City.
Paul Dickove said via Football Daily: “You look at Mane leaving… Salah, Firmino, they’re touching 30, the wrong side of 30 as well, so going forward, I think the signing of Luis Diaz in January… even then you could say it was Liverpool looking to plan forward. I don’t think anybody expected him to have the fantastic impact that he did. It’s a contingency plan… Salah, Firmino, Origi’s left, looks as if Mane’s going to go to Bayern Munich.
“All in all, it looks (Nunez) like a good signing. It’s a lot of money for somebody unproven over the last few years. But he’s 22 and Jurgen Klopp has not got much wrong in the transfer market. And you look at Liverpool, when they spend big with Alisson and Van Dijk, you’ve got to say they’ve got it 100 percent on.
“I would think that would have a little bit to do with it, the fantastic front three is aging a bit, and Klopp has signed a long-term contract… getting younger players in at top-level looking forward to the next three or four years has to be significant for them, they can’t afford to fall behind Man City.
“Signing Haaland, Julian Alvarez – who’s just won player of the season in Argentina at the age of 21 – Man City are strengthening the positions they need to but I do think going forward for the future of Liverpool, I do think they need to bring in younger players at the top level with the aging squad they’ve got.”
