Workers who staff the majority of operations at the three casinos in Detroit will vote on Friday to sanction further strikes, according to the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, which announced the plan on Thursday.
Workers at the MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino, and Hollywood at Greektown will vote on whether to sanction strikes as their union prepares to negotiate a new contract, according to a statement published by the union on Thursday.
The revelation comes at a time when labor unions are attempting to increase salaries and working conditions by utilizing the present low unemployment rate as a bargaining chip in discussions.
Around 18,300 UAW workers are employed in the Detroit assembly facility. At this time, the strike has caused one assembly plant for each of the three automakers to be closed, as well as 38 distribution centers for components held by General Motors and Stellantis, which is Chrysler’s parent company.
If workers at the casinos in Detroit decide to go on strike as a result of a vote this coming Friday, the union that represents those workers, the Detroit Casino Council, may issue strike calls as early as the middle of October, which is when their contracts are up for renewal.
