He announced that he would no longer attend the award ceremony since they had previously edited his speech to remove “reflections on police violence against Black Americans.”
GMA President Jackie Patillo later apologized to Franklin. GMA released an unedited version of the speech explaining that it was a mistake and that they were trying to shorten the length to fit two hours. Other artists joined Franklin in his boycott.
