Matt is the son of businesswoman Marilyn Lauer and executive of a bicycle company, Jay Robert Lauer. Based on the Finding Our Roots segment of the Today Show, her father was of Romanian Jewish ancestry.
He went to Ohio University for graduation but left after being hired by WOWK-TV in Huntington, West Virginia, in 1979.
