Early Life

Jerome Allen Seinfeld was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 29, 1954, to sign painters Kálmán Seinfeld and Betty Seinfeld. He was born under the astrological sign Taurus, of American nationality and white descent. He is the younger brother of Carolyn Liebling. Seinfeld grew up in Massapequa, New York. He attended and graduated from Massapequa High School on Long Island. At 16, Jerry spent time volunteering at Kibbutz Sa’ar in Israel.

After graduating from high school, Seinfeld enrolled at the State University of New York at Oswego but later transferred to Queens College, City University of New York, and graduated in 1976 with a degree in communications and theater. Seinfeld became interested in stand-up comedy at Queens College and sometimes did it at open-mic nights. After college, Seinfeld worked hard for almost 15 years as a stand-up comedian before he got his big break on TV. He was a successful comedian on the road when, in May 1981, he went on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and did a great job. Jerry dated Shoshanna Lonstein for four years. When they first started dating, she was 17, and he was 38. Jessica Sklar and Jerry met in 1998 at a sports club, just before she married theater producer Eric Nederlander. Three weeks after her honeymoon, Sklar split from her husband and moved in with Jerry. Seinfeld’s interest in stand-up comedy grew due to his brief participation in college performances. He performed at Budd Friedman’s Improv Club’s open-mic nights as a student at Queens College. Following his graduation in 1976, he auditioned at Catch a Rising Star on New York City’s open-mic night, which led to a role in a Rodney Dangerfield HBO special. He played Frankie, a postal delivery boy with comic routines that no one wanted to hear, in a minor recurring role on Benson in 1980. In January 1981, he appeared on “An Evening at the Improv” and did stand-up comedy.

In May of 1981, Seinfeld was a guest on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Seinfeld went on that show and others, like Late Night with David Letterman, after he impressed Carson and the audience. His first hour-long HBO live special, Stand-Up Confidential, debuted on September 5, 1987. The sitcom Seinfeld (1989–1998), which he co-created and co-wrote with Larry David, features him as a fictionalized version of himself and is most recognized for that role. It was one of the most lauded and well-liked sitcoms and aired on NBC from 1989 until 1998. He received the 12th-best stand-up comedian ranking from Comedy Central in 2004.
