Tow truck operators are 15 times more likely to die than employees in all other private businesses combined, according to the CDC
Industry insiders are concerned about an increase in violence amid a nationwide uptick in auto repossessions due to a spate of gruesome deaths of tow truck drivers in recent months.
Raheem Jackson, 20, accosted Steven Hughes Jr., 46, who was repossessing a car in Lexington County, close to Columbia, South Carolina, on June 12, according to authorities.
When police arrived on the scene later, they discovered the driver’s side door open, full of gunshot holes, and the tow truck lights blinking.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Hughes was found inside the truck with five gunshot wounds and was transferred to a hospital before being declared deceased.
