Following a 2017 decision to not allow a Christian flag to be flown in front of city hall, Boston has agreed to pay a Christian legal organization $2.1 million. In May, the matter came before the US Supreme Court.
According to a statement from the Christian legal organization Liberty Counsel, the $2.1 million settlement will pay for costs and attorney fees. Beginning in 2017, Liberty Counsel acted as legal counsel for Boston citizen Hal Shurtleff and Camp Constitution, his Christian civic organization.
In a statement issued by Liberty Counsel, its founder and chairman Matt Staver said, “We are happy that, after five years of litigation and a unanimous victory at the U.S. Supreme Court, we partnered with Hal Shurtleff to finally let freedom soar in Boston, the Cradle of Liberty.”
In honor of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, Shurtleff and Camp Constitution had requested permission from the city to raise a Christian flag on the flagpole at city hall. The city finally rejected their request for a permit.
