Edson Alvarez has joined West Ham from Ajax on a five-year contract, the Premier League club announced on Thursday.
Ajax stated that the two clubs had agreed to a transfer fee of €38 million ($41.90 million), which could increase to €41 million with add-ons.
“We’re thrilled to add Edson to our roster,” West Ham manager David Moyes said after making his first summer acquisition.
“This summer, we were particularly interested in bolstering our midfield, and Edson will complement our other midfield options.
He is a seasoned international player who has achieved tremendous success for both club and country thus far in his career. Since his debut in 2019, the 25-year-old has twice helped Ajax win the Eredivisie, making 147 appearances and scoring 13 goals across all competitions.
Alvarez has 69 caps for Mexico and will participate in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. His arrival will benefit the Hammers, who recently sold England midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal in a record-breaking £105 million deal.
