After learning that Russian troops had taken control of the nuclear power station in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine not long after the invasion had begun, President Biden convened a meeting with the heads of state of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany to discuss the situation.
On Sunday, President Biden discussed Russia’s control of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power complex with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
According to the White House, the decision to limit military activity in the region around the facility was made so that commanders could “ascertain the degree of safety systems” in the site.
The leaders also stressed the necessity of assisting their partners in the Middle East as a bulwark against Iran’s “destabilizing regional actions” and the ongoing conversations about Iran’s nuclear program. Both of these points were brought up throughout the meeting.
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Complex, which is located in the southern region of Ukraine, has been overrun by Russian troops ever since the commencement of the Russian invasion on February 24. Ukraine asserts that Russia is conducting strikes on Ukrainian land while employing the facility as well as the grounds surrounding it, and has accused Russia of engaging in such activity.
