Benjamin “Tony’ Atkins, the younger of two boys, was born in Detroit on August 26, 1968. His family was low-income, and both of his parents were drug and alcohol addicts.

Benjamin’s mother abandoned him in 1970, and he spent his childhood and adolescence in an orphanage.
He was physically attacked by other children while living there, and at the age ten, he was raped by one of the staff. Over the following five years, he was sexually harassed by other guys until he could flee and rejoin his mother. He lived with her and his elder brother for a while until Tony discovered one day that his mother was a prostitute. As a result, Atkins and his brother saw her having sex with customers in residence on multiple occasions.
He ran away from home again in the late 1980s because he didn’t like how his mother treated him. He lived on the streets and used drugs until he became addicted to drugs. Atkins was forced to work in low-skilled labor jobs for low pay and spend nights in homeless shelters due to his lack of formal education.
In his spare time, he frequented pimp and prostitute hangouts, but he was never imprisoned for a serious crime.

On August 21, 1992, Atkins was arrested on rape charges after being recognized on a Detroit street by 34-year-old Darlene Saunders, whom he sexually abused in October 1991. He vehemently denied participation in the killings, stating that he was a homosexual with no interest in women.
Atkins confessed to the deaths of 11 women after 12 hours. He would entice them into abandoned buildings and sexually attack them. On January 25, the corpse of Vickie Truelove, 39, was discovered; she, like the previous victims, had been sexually abused and strangled. Atkins was caught at the end of January at an abandoned building and transported to a police station for questioning. He was freed due to a lack of evidence to show his culpability in the killings.
On February 17, the bodies of three women were discovered in three rooms at the former Monterey Hotel in Highland Park: Valerie Chalk, 34, Juanita Hardy, 23, and a Jane Doe whose identity is unknown. Chalk’s relatives informed authorities she went missing after being placed on a wanted list in early November 1991. Brenda Mitchell, 28, was discovered dead in an abandoned home on April 9 after going missing four days earlier with her two children to go to the market.
