U.S. consumers were expected to spend over $240 million on collagen products in 2020. In 2014, this number was only $50 million.

With collagen’s recent boom in the supplement world, you may be wondering if you should hop on the trend, too.

If that’s on your mind, keep reading to learn about the types of collagen and how they could benefit you.

What Are the Types of Collagen?

There are many types of collagen, more than we can get into in this article (about 28), but there are five types of collagen that are considered to be the most important and prevalent. They are found all over the human body.

Type I

Type I collagen is in all human bodies and most animals and helps with our skin, bones, tendons, corneas, blood vessel walls, and other connective tissues.

Since this is the strongest type of collagen, collagen supplements prioritize this type of collagen to help with skin elasticity.

Type II

Type II collagen is in our cartilage. This type of collagen helps with our joint health.

Type III

Type III collagen is the second most abundant type of collagen found in the human body. It is also in many collagen supplements that we take.

Type V and X

These types of collagen are supplemental types that support the larger types found in the body.

Type V functions to help form the women’s placenta while pregnant. Taking collagen gummies while pregnant can be beneficial for your pregnancy if they are the right ones.

What Are the Benefits of Collagen?

So why is collagen all the rage these days? What are the benefits and why should you consider taking collagen supplements?

As we get older, our body is not able to synthesize collagen as easily as when we’re young. Because of this, our collagen levels drop, which is why people turn to supplements.

But what’s the point of collagen?

It has a lot of benefits, but the main one is keeping our skin elasticity intact, which reduces wrinkles and keeps our youthful glow.

How Can I Take Collagen Supplements?

As collagen becomes more prevalent and popular, there are more and more companies making supplements. Because of this, there are many ways to take it.

Some people prefer to take a collagen pill with water, while others would rather chew on a gummy. There is also liquid collagen that can have a flavor to add to your water. There is also a powder that can be added to coffee or smoothies to ensure you are getting enough each day.

How you take it is a personal preference!

Start Supporting Your Health Today

With the knowledge of the types of collagen and their benefits, it’s time to start taking your health seriously! Your skin will thank you for it.
