Following the decision in Roe v. Wade, the value of motherhood in the United States is currently in jeopardy.
Following the monumental decision that was handed down by the Supreme Court in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, every single newspaper in the United States has published an article about the rewriting of abortion laws in the United States. Not only are laws being revised, but also how we as a nation see parenting is being rethought.
Roe v. Wade, the decision made in 1973 by seven male judges who argued that having children “forced” women into a “distressful existence and future,” has been finally overturned as a result of this case. Roe v. Wade was overturned because of this particular case. The judgment in Dobbs has the potential to undo the damage caused by the hurtful falsehood that portrays mothers in an inaccurate and demeaning manner. Following the decision in Roe v. Wade, the United States has the potential to become a society that protects unborn children and gives their mothers more agency.
In the Dobbs case, I had the honor of representing Mississippi as the state’s counsel. When I was solicited for assistance with the case, my daughter had just turned around six months old. She accompanied me on my flight to Mississippi as well as other destinations when the non-profit law firm for which I work, Alliance Defending Freedom, was providing support to the state of Mississippi in its efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Working on the Dobbs case, which could finally bring back to America the ability to cherish every life, even a pre-born one, became even more meaningful when a baby was in tow. Dobbs is a case that could finally bring back the ability to do so. There is specifically one that springs to mind right away. This morning, a crucial gathering had to take place in Mississippi, and Abigail and I were in the air for the entirety of the morning. My babysitter was running late, and Abbi was in critical need of a nap. Luckily, I had a backup plan! She dozed off in her stroller as we made our way to the conference room where we were meeting. However, she had only been asleep for a brief period when she screamed to wake up. Even though it was a particularly strong reminder, I’m glad I got it since it brought to my attention why Dobbs is such a significant part of my life.
