According to fire authorities in New York City, three individuals were killed and more than a dozen others were injured in a fire that blasted through a Brooklyn brownstone home early Sunday.
A representative for the New York City Fire Department said firefighters were called to a residence in Crown Heights about 4:30 a.m.
“We found a three-story building that had heavy fire on three floors,” said John Esposito, chief of fire operations, at a news conference.
According to the fire department, three seriously ill individuals were carried to the hospital and proclaimed deceased.
The victims were named as Albertha West, 81, Michael West, 58, and Jamiyl West, 33, by the New York Police Department.
According to Esposito, 14 people were hurt in the incident. A fireman was also injured and was sent to the hospital with a critical but non-life threatening condition.
It was a “very difficult, dangerous fire operation,” according to Esposito.
He claimed the fire required 138 first responders and was “time-consuming” to suppress. According to the fire department, the fire was put out around two hours after the first report.
The exact cause of the fire has yet to be discovered.
