Both pilots of a small aircraft that was participating in the Thunder Over Michigan air show on Sunday were able to get out of the aircraft safely before it crashed. There was little evidence that either of the two people who were riding in the aircraft had suffered serious injuries.
According to a notification from the Federal Aviation Administration, two persons jumped out of a MiG-23 fighter jet and landed in Belleville Lake after parachuting from the aircraft south of Willow Run Airport. The supervisor of Van Buren Township, Kevin McNamara, said that the occupants of the jet were getting treatment for minor injuries at a hospital in the surrounding area.
The Wayne County Airport Authority has reported that an aircraft has crashed into a parking lot of an apartment complex in Belleville, causing damage to a number of vehicles whose occupants were not there.
It was reported by the authorities that both the pilot and the backseat passenger were able to evacuate the aircraft in a timely manner prior to the collision. Even though it didn’t seem as if either of them had suffered major injuries, paramedics nonetheless brought them both to the hospital just in case.
McNamara said that the ground men were not injured in any way.
The organizers of the Thunder Over Michigan 25th anniversary celebration announced the performance’s cancellation on their Facebook page. They said that the show could not go on as planned due to the calamity.
