The Benefits of Carbide Blades for Snow Plows
SHARE

Carbide snowplow blades have many benefits. Snowplows are a lifesaver in the winter as they help clear snow and ice from the roads to keep traffic moving. At some point, though, your snowplow blades might need to be replaced. You’ll know that it’s time when you start noticing that your blade is no longer clearing the road efficiently or if it seems as if there’s less clearance between your blade and the ground.

What are Carbide Blades?

Carbide snow plow blades are a type of blade that’s made out of a hard material called tungsten carbide. They’re made with much smaller teeth than steel blades, and they work by scraping the surface rather than pushing the snow as steel blades do. You can sharpen carbides to a finer point, which helps them cut through ice. Carbides also stay sharper for longer periods, saving you money on the regular replacement of your blades.

Why do Snow Plow Companies Choose Carbide Blades?

Snowplow blades are designed for various tasks, but they all have in common the need to be tough. Carbide blades can withstand extreme conditions and resist wear. Carbide blades will last up to three times longer than standard steel blades.

The durability of carbide blades makes them a favorite choice among snow plow companies. The ability to clear snow more efficiently will help with your business’s bottom line as you’ll spend less time on the road and more time making money.

The Benefits of Carbide Blades for Snow Plows

Carbide blades are more durable and strong than other blades. They are also sharper, which leads to a smoother road surface. The carbide blade is made of tungsten hardening alloy and chromium carbide, which resists abrasion much better than steel because it produces a harder surface. Carbide blades will not rust, which means that you won’t need to worry about the blade being in contact with water.

You can use your snowplow for a longer time before replacing the blade because there is less wear and tear on the blade. Carbide blades are also light, so they don’t weigh down the snowplow as much as steel blades. This makes it much easier for your truck to maneuver, twist, and turn on the road without coming into contact with the ground or other objects.

Types of Carbide Blades

There are two main types of carbide blades. One is a cemented carbide material, and the other is a non-cemented carbide material. The main difference between the two is that you must use a grinding wheel to sharpen them when they become dull with the cemented carbide. However, with a non-cemented blade, you can just hit it with some sandpaper, and it will be sharpened again.

The best part about using cemented carbide blades for your snow plow is that they last much longer than other types of blades. For example, if you have an average-sized car and drive over it with your snowplow blade at a hundred miles per hour, the blade would break if it wasn’t made from cemented carbide.  Non-cemented carbide blades aren’t as expensive either, making them more tempting to buy since they won’t break as easily as cemented carbides.

How to Maintain Your New Carbide Blade

Since carbide blades are more expensive, you’ll want them to last a long time. You can keep your new carbide blade in good shape by following the manufacturer’s guidelines. If they recommend using a rust-inhibiting fluid, make sure to do so. It will protect the blade from corrosion and help it last longer.

You may also need to sharpen your blade after some time has elapsed. To find out if you need to sharpen your blade, measure the height of the leading edge of the blade on the pointy part. If it has worn down too much, then it’s time for a new one. The best way to do this is with an angle grinder and a sharpening stone or wheel.

The right snow plow company can help you get the job done. But if you need to get the best results and avoid fires and other problems, you need to invest in the right equipment. Carbide blades are a long-term investment that can save you money in the long run and keep your snow plowing equipment in good shape.
