The man who used a folding chair to bring the gunman to the ground in Alabama received a commendation from a police captain in the state.

The man who is accused of opening fire and killing three people in Alabama on Friday displayed a significant black eye in the picture that was taken of him after being hit with a folding chair.

Robert Findlay Smith, 70, was charged with capital murder for an incident that took place on Thursday evening at a “Boomers Potluck” held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church outside of Birmingham. The incident took place earlier in the day.

It is believed that the suspect shot a victim who was 75 years old, and two people who were 84 years old before a churchgoer in his 70s approached the suspect and struck him with a folding chair to stop the attack.
