Jeffrey Norman, the chief of police in Milwaukee, said the killing happened soon after the Juneteenth block party was over.
Police say six teenagers were hurt in a shooting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Monday after a Juneteenth party.
Milwaukee police said that thousands of people were at a block party on North Martin Luther King Drive when a fight between several girls may have led to a shooting that hurt four girls and two boys between the ages of 14 and 19. After that, the patients were taken to a hospital to be treated.
A video posted online shows what happened before the shooting. It shows several girls pushing each other down the street and dozens of people swarming the group. Then, a teen pulls out a pistol and fires several shots.
“There’s no good reason for a young person to have any gun in their hands. There is no reason. At a news meeting after the shooting, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said, “It is completely unacceptable.”
Johnson, a Democrat, also said that the killing took away from the community’s togetherness just before it happened.
“There were thousands of people here celebrating, getting to know each other, and feeling part of a community. That is a powerful thing. “That’s what this day is all about,” he said.
As families were at the block party, the mayor said, the killing could have been much worse.
“There were families out there,” Johnson said. “There were children around. Out here, there were babies.”
He also said, “If you’re an adult or a young person, you have a gun and you’re angry, right? Don’t show up for things like this. Don’t show up. Get whatever help you need.”
“You have no right to take away the happiness this community felt,” the mayor said with a lot of emotion. “You have no right to put kids in danger in this town. You don’t have the right to put the male and female of this department and our friends in the Office of Violence Prevention in danger because you want to go out and act ignorant with a gun, because that’s what it is: nonsense.”
“No matter what,” Johnson said, “arguments should never lead to guns being fired.”
“People used to just walk away from an argument or end it and leave it at that, or if things got really bad, they would get into a fist fight,” he said. “You don’t pull out a gun and kill someone over something as simple and pointless as a small disagreement or argument.”
Johnson said, “We’ve seen enough of that, too much of that, and it needs to stop.”
The shooting happened around 4:21 p.m., said Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, “after the Juneteenth celebration, where thousands of people in our community gathered peacefully.”
“What’s going on with our kids in Milwaukee?” During the press conference, Chief Norman asked the city to help.
“Parents, guardians, and older people, we need to work together to stop the violence our kids bring to the streets. “No handgun or other dangerous weapon should be in the hands of our children,” he added.
Police say the teens were hurt, but not severely enough to kill them.
A preliminary investigation shows that a 17-year-old boy shot during the incident was also a shooter, police said, adding that they are still looking for more suspects.

“MPD wants us all to find better ways to solve problems without using guns,” Norman said.
