On Wednesday, April 16, 2025, Hongkong Post said it had suspended goods mail services by sea to the United States of America and will halt its air mail service for items containing goods effective from April 27 due to “bullying” U.S. tariffs.
According to the Hong Kong Post, while exporting things to the United States, Hong Kong residents “should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the United States’ unreasonable and bullying acts.”

Other mail products holding documents but not goods will be unaffected. “The United States is unreasonable, bullying other countries, and imposing abusive tariffs. “Hong Kong Post will definitely not collect any so-called tariffs on behalf of the United States,” it stated.

According to a US government notice, Hong Kong, a special administrative area of China, is subject to the same tariffs as the rest of China.
The former British colony has long been known as a free and open business hub, but China’s installation of sweeping national security legislation on Hong Kong in 2020 attracted condemnation from the United States, prompting it to lose the financial hub’s special status under US law.

Hongkong Post said its suspension was due to the U.S. government’s elimination of the “de minimus” exemption and the increase in tariffs for postal items from Hong Kong containing goods to the U.S. from May 2.
DHL, a courier company used frequently by businesses in Hong Kong, said it would “continue to process inbound shipments to the United States in accordance with the applicable customs rules and regulations”.
