Former Manchester United and France left-back Patrice Evra has revealed that He is still hurt that Manchester United did move for Antonio Conte,
Antonio Conte who has previously managed and won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017 was appointed by Tottenham Hotspurs in 2021 to replace Nuno Espirito Santo after a poor run of performances in the Premier League.
The Italian coach had an excellent season with the North London club helping them finish fourth in the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League after inheriting a team 9th in the Premier League.
Before joining Tottenham, Antonio Conte had been linked to replace under-fire Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjae. Manchester United eventually sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer late in November.
Manchester United went in for Ralf Rangnick as the interim replacement of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but the Germain tactician failed to turn this around at the Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid and finished 6th in the Premier League and endured one of their worst performances in the League.
Erik Ten Hag was appointed as the substantive manager for Manchester United later in the season and the former Ajax coach will be seeking to make the Red Devils competitive again.
Patrice Evra has thrown his weight and backed Erik Ten Hag to succeed at Old Trafford.
What did Patrice Evra say?
Speaking via Daily Mirror, the Manchester United icon said: “It hurts my heart. Because I think Conte, [Jurgen] Klopp, [Pep] Guardiola – all those managers are the best in the world right now and we could have had him at Manchester United.
“But some people at the club said: ‘It’s not our style, it’s not what we’re looking for.’ ‘So, let’s see, now we have Erik ten Hag. Let’s see what he’s going to do. He has my support.
“But then, even if you brought a chef in, as the manager of Man United, he’d have my full support.”
The former Manchester United left-back added: “It’s a massive disappointment because he could have done something at Man United.
“And you can see with Tottenham, he helped them to qualify for the Champions League.
“That’s why I say it hurts. Not because it’s Tottenham – I love every team – but it’s just because Conte could have done something.”
Pundits had already tipped Tottenham to mount a strong title challenge next season after their impressive summer so far.
Tottenham has signed Yves Bissouma from Brighton.Ivan Perisic from Inter and Fraser Foster from Southampton.
