According to the district attorney in the area, a male from North Carolina who battered a woman for 11 hours received a sentence of almost 40 years in jail.
According to the local ABC affiliate WPDE, Joseph Timothy O’Buckley was recently tried and found guilty of a number of offenses, including attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping, assault by strangulation, assault causing serious bodily injury, assault on a female, intimidating a witness, and being a habitual felon.
The conviction was announced online by district attorney Ted Bell, who oversees the western North Carolina counties of McDowell and Rutherford.
According to the district attorney, O’Buckley was sentenced in relation to an event that happened at a motel in Marion, North Carolina, where he was staying with a woman he knew.
According to reports, O’Buckley locked the door and imprisoned the victim inside a room. He allegedly repeatedly beat and strangled the victim over an 11-hour period while threatening to murder her and telling her she wouldn’t make it.
The victim eventually got out of the room when O’Buckley fell asleep and ran for assistance.
The woman was transferred right away to McDowell Mission Hospital to receive treatment for her severe injuries after emergency medical services, the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, and Marion Police Department rushed to the site.
After being charged, O’Buckley allegedly continued to contact the woman from jail and threatened to harm her if she testified against him. This was revealed by the authorities when O’Buckley was caught.
O’Buckley’s trial, according to Bell’s news release, spanned three days and featured the victim’s lengthy testimony for a number of hours. Ultimately, the jury concluded that O’Buckley was convicted of all charges.
Bell said, “We are extremely grateful for the trust and tremendous bravery the victim has displayed throughout this process, to the witnesses who came forward to support her, to the McDowell County EMS, McDowell Mission Hospital, McDowell County Sheriff’s Office, and Marion Police Department for their work in this case, and to the jury for delivering justice for the victim.
