A tour bus bound for New York City rolled over on a highway in the southern Adirondacks of the state on Friday, resulting in one death and eleven injuries, according to state police.
According to a press release from state police, the collision happened on Interstate 87, the Adirondack Northway, in the town of Lake George, Warren County, just before 1 p.m.
The police have not disclosed the crash’s circumstances.
Officials verified that the tour bus operated by Skyway Coach Line originated in Montreal, Canada, and was traveling south on I-87 towards New York City.
As emergency services arrived, footage from the scene showed the big white and green tour bus on its side. According to the police, twenty-four passengers were on the bus when it crashed. State police confirmed that one person died in the rollover.
According to authorities, one passenger was airlifted to Albany Medical Center and is currently in critical condition. After the collision, ten more people suffered minor injuries.
Governor Kathy Hochul praised the “heroic efforts” of first responders in an X-post.
“I join New Yorkers in praying for all involved in this horrific incident & am grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders,” Hochul wrote in a letter.
Hochul added that rescue operations were being carried out at the location by police and Department of Transportation personnel.
There was a closure on the southbound highway between exits 23 and 22.
Deanna Cohen, a police spokesperson, stated that no additional information was available and that the scene was still being evaluated.
“I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of all involved in this horrific incident and am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders,” Hochul said.
