In August 2023, Andreas Probst was hit by a car in Las Vegas as he was riding a bicycle. This resulted in his death.
A judge has determined that one of the two adolescents accused of killing a retired police chief—whom they claimed to have run over while he was riding a bicycle on a Las Vegas street—is not competent to stand trial.
According to cover documents, Jesus Ayala, now 19 years old, has been transferred from jail to a safe mental health facility in Nevada for assessment, treatment, and, should he be deemed competent, a potential trial. Criminal charges against him are suspended due to the commitment order.
David Westbrook, his public defence attorney, has been contacted by Fox News Digital.
In the wake of the 64-year-old Andreas “Andy” Probst, a retired police chief in the Bell, California, neighbourhood, Ayala and Jzamir Keys, who was 16 at the time, entered a not guilty plea to murder and other counts last year.
In August 2023, Probst was riding his bicycle when the driver of an alleged stolen automobile slammed him from behind, according to the footage, leaving him critically injured on the side of the road.
The driver says, “Ready?” in the hit-and-run footage while the amused passenger captures the accident on his iPhone.
He says to the driver, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, hit his a–,” and he swerves the Hyundai Elantra into the bike lane behind Probst, who is pedalling while sporting a red shirt and shorts.
Turning, the passenger captures Probst stopping by the side of the road with his iPhone pointed out the window.
In the 31-second video, the passenger exclaims, “Damn, that n—- got knocked out!”
The frightened driver responds, “Oh, s—, we need to get out of here,” and presses the throttle pedal.
After being brought to a hospital, Probst passed away. Upon Ayala’s arrest later that day, he is said to have boasted about how easily he would get off as a minor.
“I’ll be out in thirty days,” he was purportedly heard stating on a body camera used by an officer.
The cop said, “You might be out of juvie in thirty days and moved to an adult jail, because that’s how bad it is.”
According to the incident report, Ayala did not regret the man’s passing. “It’s simply a hit-and-run, f——, huh. Slap on the wrist,” the adolescent said to the police with a flippancy.
Days after sharing the graphic video on Instagram with pals and it becoming viral at his local high school, Keys was taken into custody.
