Jane Lubchenco serves in the role of Deputy Director for Climate and Environment in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. She will be barred from taking part in any NAS activities for the next five years.
According to the charges made by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the infraction took place when she was editing a manuscript for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal that included her brother-in-law as an author.
The article was definitively removed from publication in the fall of 2016. The National Academy of Sciences said that it was not based on the most recent data and that the author had a “personal relationship” with Lubchenco. Additionally, they stated that the author had a conflict of interest.
