According to the agency, the sun will pass between the orbits of Earth and NASA’s STEREO-A satellite on Saturday.
This is the mission’s first Earth flyby in its nearly 17-year lifespan.
Two spacecraft, the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on October 25, 2006. STEREO-A and STEREO-B were the first to reach solar orbit.
The stereoscopic or multiple-perspective image of our closest star was made possible by the collaboration of two satellites. The sun ultimately emerged as a complete sphere in 2011 after their orbits had diverged by 180 degrees.
