The hacker who caused the catastrophe claims to have stolen one billion records from the Shanghai police department, making it China’s largest data breach in history.

Information “about one billion Chinese national citizens and several billion case records” was posted for sale on the hacker forum Breach Forums for the sum of 10 Bitcoin, which is equivalent to over $200,000 in today’s currency.

On Sunday, an anonymous user known as ChinaDan claimed to have the “name, address, birthplace, national ID number,” “mobile number,” and “all crime/case information.”

Users on Weibo and WeChat expressed extreme concern about the post’s veracity. Despite the fact that this message has not been verified, it has garnered significant attention in China and around the world.
