According to ESPN sources, Manchester United have intensified their pursuit of Andre Onana, as David de Gea’s future at the club remains uncertain.
Before submitting a formal offer to Inter Milan, United discusses with Onana’s representatives.
The Serie A club values the Cameroon goalkeeper between $40 and $50 million, and Ten Hag knows Onana well from their time together at Ajax. Meanwhile, De Gea will become a free agent on Friday, when his contract with Old Trafford expires.
According to ESPN’s sources, an agreement to extend his stay could still be reached after June 30 — the last day of De Gea’s current contract — but there is no assurance that the Spanish goalkeeper will return to the club he joined from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
According to a source close to the negotiations, “both sides are reflecting” before making their next move while negotiations “remain open.”
Manager Erik ten Hag has stated publicly that he wishes De Gea to remain, despite the club’s efforts to drastically reduce his weekly salary of £375,000.
United sources have denied a report that the club reneged on a contract extension for De Gea after the player had already signed it.
United are also investigating other goalkeepers, including David Raya of Brentford and Diogo Costa of Porto.
Dean Henderson will be permitted to sign a permanent contract with Nottingham Forest once the goalkeeper situation is clarified, according to ESPN sources.
Henderson impressed while on loan at the City Ground last season, and Forest manager Steve Cooper is eager to have him return as the club prepares for its second Premier League season.
