Personal Life

Alexandra and Vanessa Kerry are the children of Kerry’s 1970 marriage to Julia Thorne. Kerry’s daughter Alexandra was born just a couple of days after he started law school. Julia petitioned John for a divorce in 1982, when she was depressed and anxious, but the process dragged on until 1997 when the marriage was finally dissolved. With his father’s military career, the family traveled around a lot until he was dismissed from the Army Air Corps.

On the other hand, John Forbes Kerry was also raised in Groton, Massachusetts, and Millis, Massachusetts, before relocating to Washington, D.C., when his father accepted a position in the Department of the Navy’s Office of General Counsel and later became a diplomat in the State Department’s Bureau of United Nations Affairs.
