Who is Albert Fish?
Albert Fish was a well-known American serial killer, child molester, rapist, and cannibal who committed at least three child murders from July 1924 to June 1928. He was born on May 19, 1870, in Washington, D.C., United States of America, under the zodiac sign Taurus, with the nationality of America and of white descent. He was born to Randall and Ellen. Fish was the youngest of three still-alive siblings: Walter, Annie, and Edwin. His family was plagued by mental illness.
Therefore, his uncle became manic, one of his brothers was institutionalized, and his sister Annie was labeled as having a “mental ailment.”
Three other family members also had mental illness diagnoses, including his mother, who experienced “auditory and visual hallucinations.” In 1875, at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station, his father, a fertilizer maker, passed away from a heart attack. After his father died, his mother placed her son in Saint John’s Orphanage in Washington, where he spent most of his life and was frequently physically abused. In 1880, Fish’s mother secured a government job and was able to remove him from the orphanage. At 12, he began a relationship with a gay boy, his companion.
Through this, he was introduced to urolagnia (drinking urine) and coprophagia (eating feces). After that, he began going to public baths to watch other boys undress, spending many of his weekends doing so. He used to send lewd letters to ladies whose names he got from classified ads and marriage services throughout his life.
Early Life and Criminal History
When Fish arrived in New York City in 1890, he quickly became involved in male prostitution and began assaulting and raping youngsters, most of whom were younger than six years old.

Six children were born to the couple after they tied the knot: Albert, Anna, Gertrude, Eugene, John, and Henry Fish.
Fish was convicted of grand larceny in 1903 and spent time at Sing Sing prison. Fish said he remembered when a male partner took him to a wax museum. He became obsessed with sexual mutilation after witnessing a human penis being cut in half.
After a few years, Fish was working in Wilmington, Delaware, when he met Thomas Kedden, a 19-year-old man. After they had been friends for some time, Fish escorted Kedden to where he was staying, where they started a sadomasochistic relationship. It was unknown whether Fish coerced Kedden to do these things, but his confession suggests that Kedden was intellectually challenged.
Fish then took Kedden to “an old country house” after ten days, where he tormented him for two weeks. Kedden was ultimately tied up and had his penis chopped off by Fish. Fish later reflected, “I shall never forget his scream or the look he gave me.” Fish had initially planned to kill Kedden, dismember him, and take the pieces home. Still, he was afraid that the hot weather would alert the authorities.
As a substitute, Fish applied peroxide to the wound, covered it with a handkerchief covered in Vaseline, left a $10 bill, kissed Kedden goodbye, and then walked away. “I took the first train I could get back home,” he said later. “I never found out what happened to him or tried to find out.” In January of 1917, Fish’s wife left him for the family’s border and handyman, John Straube.
Escalation
Fish abducted an intellectually disabled boy in Georgetown in 1919. Later, he said he targeted African Americans and people with mental disabilities because he thought their deaths would not be noticed. After that, it was noted that Fish occasionally hired guys to get him other kids and that he used his “implements of hell”—a meat cleaver, a butcher knife, and a tiny handsaw—to torture, mutilate, and kill young children.
Beatrice Kiel, age eight, when found by Fish, was playing alone on her parents’ Staten Island, New York, farm on July 11, 1924. He gave her money to come to help him look for rhubarb. Fish was going to leave the farm when her mother chased her away. Fish ran away, but later he went back to the Kiels’ barn to sleep. Beatrice’s father found him there and told him to leave.
Fish then murdered Francis McDonnell, who was also on Staten Island then. Before kidnapping Grace Budd, Fish failed in an attempt to test his “implementations of Hell” on a child called Cyril Quinn, whom he had been assaulting.
Murder of Grace Budd
In the New York World’s Sunday edition, Fish came across a classified item that said, “Young man, 18 years old, wishes position in the country,” on May 25, 1928. Fish, who was 58 years old then, pretended to be hiring Edward when he visited the Budd family in Manhattan on May 28. Fish later said his true intentions were to bind Edward, mutilate him, and let him bleed to death.
Frank Howard, a farmer from Farmingdale, New York, introduced Fish. He said he would send for Budd and his friend Willie in a few days and pledge to recruit them. Fish did not show up but apologized and scheduled a new date in a telegram to the Budd family. Fish met 10-year-old Grace Budd, Edward’s younger sister, when he got back.
He hastily concocted a lie about having to go to his niece’s birthday party after suddenly changing his mind about being romantic with Grace. He persuaded Grace’s parents, Delia Flanagan and Albert Budd I, to go to the party with him that night. Fish then drove Grace to “Wisteria Cottage,” a run-down residence at 359 Mountain Road in Irvington, New York, where he had previously decided to carry out the murder of his next victim. He killed the girl there, then ate her.
Letter To The mother of Grace Budd
In November 1934, Grace’s parents got a letter from someone who didn’t say who they were. This letter led the police to Fish. Mrs. Budd, who was illiterate and unable to read the letter herself, had her son read it. The letter states:
My dear Mrs. Budd
In 1894 a friend of mine shipped as a deckhand on the steamer Tacoma, Capt John Davis. They sailed from San Francisco to Hong Kong China. On arriving there he and two others went ashore and got drunk. When they returned the boat was gone. At that time there was a famine in China. Meat of any kind was from $1 to 3 Dollars a pound. So great was the suffering among the very poor that all children under 12 were sold to the Butchers to be cut up and sold for food in order to keep others from starving. A boy or girl under 14 was not safe in the street. You could go in any shop and ask for steak – chops – or stew meat. Part of the naked body of a boy or girl would be brought out and just what you wanted cut from it. A boy or girls behind which is the sweetest part of the body and sold as veal cutlet brought the highest price. John staid there so long he acquired a taste for human flesh. On his return to N.Y. he stole two boys one 7 one 11. Took them to his home stripped them naked tied them in a closet then burned everything they had on. Several times every day and night he spanked them – tortured them – to make their meat good and tender. First he killed the 11 yr old boy, because he had the fattest ass and of course the most meat on it. Every part of his body was cooked and eaten except Head – bones and guts. He was roasted in the oven, (all of his ass) boiled, broiled, fried, stewed. The little boy was next, went the same way. At that time I was living at 409 E 100 St, rear – right side. He told me so often how good human flesh was I made up my mind to taste it. On Sunday June the 3 – 1928 I called on you at 406 W 15 St. Brought you pot cheese – strawberries. We had lunch. Grace sat in my lap and kissed me. I made up my mind to eat her, on the pretense of taking her to a party. You said Yes she could go. I took her to an empty house in Westchester I had already picked out. When we got there, I told her to remain outside. She picked wild flowers. I went upstairs and stripped all my clothes off. I knew if I did not I would get her blood on them. When all was ready I went to the window and called her. Then I hid in a closet until she was in the room. When she saw me all naked she began to cry and tried to run down stairs. I grabbed her and she said she would tell her mama. First I stripped her naked. How she did kick – bite and scratch. I choked her to death then cut her in small pieces so I could take my meat to my rooms, cook and eat it. How sweet and tender her little ass was roasted in the oven. It took me 9 days to eat her entire body. I did not fuck her, though, I could of had I wished. She died a virgin.
Capture, Trial, and Execution
The police apprehended Fish after investigating the letter. The letter was sent in an envelope bearing a little hexagonal insignia bearing the initials “N.Y. P.C.B.A.” for “New York Private Chauffeur’s Benevolent Association.” The authorities arrested Fish at his residence after discovering where he lived.
William F. King, the case’s lead investigator, waited outside the room for Fish’s return. He agreed to be questioned at the police station but pulled out a razor blade. King took the blade from him and led him to the station. Fish didn’t try to deny that he killed Grace Budd. Instead, he said he planned to kill her brother, Edward, at the house. On March 11, 1935, after Fish’s arrest for the murder of Grace Budd, his trial began in White Plains, New York.
The judge was Frederick P. Close, and the Westchester County Chief Assistant District Attorney in charge of the case was Elbert F. Gallagher.
His defense attorney was James Dempsey, a former prosecutor and former mayor of Peekskill, New York, and the trial lasted ten days. And the trial lasted for ten days.
