Rainn Wilson’s Biography

Rainn Dietrich Wilson, famously and better known as “Rainn Wilson” in the entertainment industry and on numerous social media platforms, is a well-known American film actor, comedian, podcaster, and producer who hails from Seattle, Washington, United States of America. He garnered three consecutive Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance as Dwight Schrute on the NBC sitcom The Office, for which he is best known.

Rainn was born on January 20, 1966, in Seattle, Washington, United States of America, under the zodiac sign Capricorn, with the ethnicity of white and of American nationality. He is the son of Shay Cooper, an actress and yoga teacher, and Robert G. Wilson, an artist and novelist best known for the science-fiction novel Tentacles of Dawn. Rainn went to Kellogg Middle School and Shorecrest High School in Shoreline, Washington. In the school band, he played the clarinet and the bassoon. After his family moved to Wilmette, Illinois, USA, he changed schools and finished high school there. After he graduated from high school, he went to Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, for a while before transferring to the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1986, he got a bachelor’s degree in drama from the University of Washington. He then attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program. He earned an MFA in acting and worked with The Acting Company. 

Early in his career, Wilson performed frequently in theater, including at The Public Theater, Playwrights Horizons, Ensemble Studio Theatre, the Roundabout, and the Guthrie Theater. In the 1996 performance of Suzan-Lori Parks’ Venus, directed by Richard Foreman, he portrayed one of the eight chorus singers.

Career

Rainn’s first on-screen appearance was in an episode of the famous soap opera One Life to Live in 1997. He landed a supporting role on The Expendables two years later. The same year, he made his acting debut in a feature film with the science-fiction comedy Galaxy Quest. In 2000, he appeared in Cameron Crowe’s autobiographical drama Almost Famous. Then, in 2002, he received his first leading role in Rob Zombie’s first horror movie, House of 1000 Corpses, playing one of the multiple leads.

He landed a position on the show Six Feet Under in 2003. He appeared in roles on Reno 911, Law and Order: SVU, CSI, Monk, Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, and many other shows. He starred in the comedic movie Sahara and the independently produced mockumentary movie The Life Coach in 2005. In the HBO series Six Feet Under, he played Arthur Martin from 2003 to 2005 in a recurring role. He played Trevor in the CBS comedy Mom from 2018 until 2021. Wilson played Dwight Schrute in The NBC sitcom Office from 2005 until the show’s finale in 2013. Other film credits include leading roles in the comedies The Rocker in 2008 and Super in 2010, as well as supporting appearances in the horror movies Cooties in 2014 and The Boy in 2015.

As the bad guy Gallaxhar in the computer-animated science fiction movie Monsters vs. Aliens and Gargamel! in Smurfs: The Lost Village, he supplied his voice in 2009. He also appeared as Harry Mudd in Star Trek: Discovery in 2017 and Star Trek: Short Treks in 2018 and as a supporting character in The Meg the same year. In the DC Animated Movie Universe, he also provides the voice of Lex Luthor. In addition to his acting work, Wilson co-founded the online media firm SoulPancake in 2008 and released his autobiography, The Bassoon King, in 2015.
