Since February 18, according to Kirby, Austin and his Russian coworker have not been in contact with one another. It has been 79 days since Russia initially started its invasion of Ukraine, and this is the first meeting that has taken place since then.

Kirby stated that “Secretary Austin encouraged an early ceasefire in Ukraine and underlined the need to preserve lines of communication,” and he went on to add that “Secretary Austin also highlighted the necessity to preserve lines of communication.”
