How to Clean Partial Dentures

If you want to preserve the life of your dentures, you must clean them on a regular basis. Below are the main steps to cleaning partial dentures:

Rinse Them Off

Before you do anything, rinse your dentures off under cold water. By doing so, it’ll get rid of food particles that are stuck on them. You want the brushing and washing process to go as smoothly as possible, so don’t skip this step.

Brush Them

Next, moisten your toothbrush with water so that the bristles become more pliable. You don’t need anything fancy, just a regular, soft-bristled toothbrush works fine. Next, apply a denture cleaner or a mild abrasive toothpaste to the brush and begin brushing your partial dentures.

Be thorough with this step and make sure you’re getting rid of any food bits and denture adhesive that might be stuck on them.

Once you completed that step, thoroughly rinse the dentures off under warm water.

The Overnight Regimen

It’s a good idea to always soak your dentures overnight. The reason being is because dentures can lose their shape if they’re not moist. So place them in denture solution or warm water overnight to keep them clean and moist.

Also, to preserve the life of your dentures, avoid cleaning them with harsh solutions. You can use mild hand soap or dish soap to clean them. But other household chemicals and most toothpastes are too abrasive and can ruin your dentures.

Also, never rinse or soak your dentures in hot water. If you do, it could warp the material of the dentures.

Don’t Forget About Your Natural Teeth

Even though you wear dentures, it’s important to take care of your remaining teeth. Even if you have no teeth, bacteria can still build up in your mouth. So brush your tongue, gums, and lips with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

You can also use mouthwash to further kill the bacteria in your mouth. By doing so, you’ll ensure that you have good oral health.
