Protesters assaulted a number of New York City Police Department officers in the Bronx on Saturday, including the highest-ranking uniformed member of the department.
The NYPD said in a tweet around 12.30 pm that at least three officers were injured when someone brandished a long object at officers while arresting someone on the opposite side of one of the bridge fences.
The group included the department’s chief, Terence Monahan, whose group was seen on video by other white members of his department – who were not identified at the time of the attack – and suffered life-threatening injuries to their hands, a police department spokesman said.
The video shows someone from the group approaching the fence on the bridge, leaning over and hitting the officers who were huddled behind the barrier.

At least three officers suffered serious injuries, according to a statement from NYPD Chief of Police James O’Neill. Three officers suffer a serious injury, one of them in the head, and two in their arms. Monahan is being bashed for lauding NYPD members for taking a knee during protesters ‘demonstrations in the city on June 1.
It was not immediately clear whether the video shows only some of the incidents of violence or if others occurred off-camera.
