Early Life

Henry Louis Wallace is a well-known American serial killer born on November 4, 1965, in Barnwell, South Carolina, United States of America, under the zodiac sign Scorpio, with black ethnicity and American nationality. He was born to Lottie Mae Wallace, with whom he grew up and worked as a textile worker. Henry stated that her mother sometimes verbally abused her son for the slightest mistake.

Henry attended and graduated from Barnwell High School, where he was chosen to the student council and was also a cheerleader. He became a disc jockey for a Barnwell radio station after she graduated from high school. Before joining the U.S. Navy in 1985, Henry attended several colleges to gain his highest credentials. He married his high school crush, the former Marietta Brabham, the same year he joined the U.S. Navy. He got honorably discharged from the Navy in 1992.

Criminal Career And Murder Victims

Henry began his criminal career in the Navy, using several narcotic drugs, such as crack cocaine. He served warrants in Washington for several burglaries in and around the Seattle metro area. He got arrested in January 1988 for breaking into a hardware store. He went to court in June of the same year, where he pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary and got sentenced to two years of supervised probation. According to statements made by the probation officer, Patrick Seaburg, Henry did not attend most mandatory meetings.

On March 8, 1990, Henry murdered an 18-year-old student named Tashanda Bethea and dumped her body in a lake in his hometown. She was discovered later, after several days of searching for her. After the body was found, Henry got interrogated by the police about her disappearance and cause of death but was released because he was found innocent. He was also asked again by the police for his attempted rape of a 16-year-old Barnwell girl, but again he was set free with no charges. This case led to the termination of his marriage, and he got fired from his job as an operator for Sandoz Chemical Co.

In February 1991, Henery got arrested after trying to pawn valuable video and recording equipment that he stole from Barnwell High School and the radio station where he once worked as a disc jockey. After his release from police custody, he relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he got several fast-food restaurant jobs and later became a Taco Bell manager near the now-defunct Eastland Mall. In May 1992, Henry murdered 33-year-old Sharon Nance, who was a convicted drug dealer and prostitute, after she asked for payment for her service. He then dropped her body by a railroad track, which was discovered a few days later.

In June 1992, he raped and strangled Caroline Love, age 29, at her apartment and dumped her body in a wooded area. Love was a friend of Henry’s girlfriend and her college roommate. Love’s body was discovered two years later after her sisters reported her missing to the police. On February 19, 1993, he again raped 20-year-old Shawna Hawk, a college student who was also a worker at Taco Bell, where he was a manager.
In that same year, Henry raped and murdered several black women, including Audrey Spain, 24, Valencia M. Jumper, 21 (he burned her body to cover up his crimes), and 20-year-old Michelle Stinson; in 1994, he also raped and murdered 24-year-old Betty Jean Baucom and Vanessa Little Mack, 25. On February 4, 1994, Henry got arrested on charges of shoplifting. On March 8, 1994, Henry raped and murdered Brandi June Henderson, an 18-year-old student, while she held her son. But her son survived the incident.

After the police discovered two more bodies of black women, they increased their patrol in east Charlotte. But after all this, Henry sneaked into robbery. He raped and killed his girlfriend’s co-worker, Debra Ann Slaughter, 35, by stabbing her 38 times in the stomach before he took away her money, which he used to buy drugs. The body of Debra Ann Slaughter was discovered on March 12, 1994. He got arrested on the day Slaughter’s body was found. He confessed for 12 hours that he had murdered 10 Charlotte women and admitted to an 11th murder he committed before moving to Charlotte.

Trials

The case against Henry got put off for two years because of issues with the venue, the jury, and DNA evidence from people killed. His trial started in September 1996. The prosecutor, Marsha Goodnow, asked for the death penalty. Still, Wallace’s defense lawyer, Isabel Day, said that Wallace had a mental illness and should get a life sentence instead.

He also said that the killings did not amount to first-degree murder because they were not planned ahead of time. Henry Wallace was found guilty of nine murders on January 7, 1997, and on January 29, he got nine death sentences. He told the families of his victims after being found guilty: “None of these ladies, none of your daughters, mothers, sisters, or family members in any way deserved what they got.” “They done nothing to me that called for their murder.”

Victims of Henry Wallace

On Death Row

Since he was on death row, Henry married a former prison nurse, Rebecca Torrijas. Their marriage ceremony was held next to the state’s execution chamber. The manager of the prison’s Death Row unit and Isabel Day, the public defender for Mecklenburg County, were there to see the wedding. Wallace filed an appeal to get his 1997 death sentence overturned.

He said that he was forced to admit things and that his constitutional rights were violated at every step when the sentences were upheld in 2000 by the North Carolina Supreme Court. His appeal was dismissed in 2001 by the U.S. Supreme Court. The last time Wallace tried to get his conviction and death sentence overturned, in 2005, Superior Court Judge Charles Lamm turned him down.
