The Discovery of Florida

When you’re exploring St Augustine things to do, you can find the discovery of Florida often goes to Juan Ponce de Leon. He was the governor of Puerto Rico when he found Florida. He named Florida after the Easter season since it’s found during this time.

Its Name

St. Augustine’s name is after a saint. Since it fell on a day honoring a saint, it was named after them. St. Augustine was meant to be a place for the Catholic missionary settlements and as a military outpost.

The Treaty of Paris

After the Treaty of Paris which ended the French and Indian War, Florida was given to the British. At this point, it’s a pro-British colony during the American Revolutionary War.

Due to the second Treaty of Paris, it gave America’s colonies its freedom. At this point, Florida is back to Spain.

When the Spanish arrive, they see that a failed colony from New Smyrna moved to St. Augustine. At this point, the ethnic composition changes in the area.

Historic Locations

Due to its history and presence, you can enjoy many of the older buildings such as what’s now Flagler College (it was the Flagler Hotel). In the 1800s, there was a renaissance in the area thanks to Henry Flagler.

What’s now the Lightner Museum and City of St. Augustine offices, was once the Alcazar Hotel. You can still enjoy the Casa Monica.

Education

In this area, there are no county high schools. Primary and secondary education is through the St. Johns County School District.

Within the area, you can find the Pedro Menendez High School, St. Augustine High School, and St. Johns Technical High School. There’s also the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind.

The Florida Memorial University was located in St. Augustine in the 20th century before being moved to Miami. This university was historically a black institution.

During World War II, it trained the first blacks in the U.S. You can check out a historic marker for Zora Neale Hurston. It’s located at the house where she lived while she taught at this location.

Notable People

In the area, you can find out about notable people such as the hockey coach, Murray Armstrong, and the St. Augustine mayor, Andrew Anderson. You can also check out information about the political theorist and scholar, John Alexander Armstrong.
