Whether you like the great outdoors, excellent dining, sightseeing, or getting a historical tour, the Midwest has something for you.

So if you’re on the hunt for fun things to do in the Midwest, we’ve written a quick guide to the five best things on offer. Read on for more!

1. Natural Wonders

If you’re a nature lover, there’s plenty of outdoor activity in the Midwest! No matter what state you’re in, national and state parks are sure to draw your interest.

The Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes are located near Traverse City, Michigan. These dunes tower over 450 feet over the lake, with a beautiful view.

Illinois is full of hidden gems of the Midwest, such as Shawnee National Forest, Matthiessen State Park, and Starved Rock State Park.

If an extended stay in nature is more your thing, check out sankotylakes.com for an all-inclusive vacation package on the Sankoty aquifer and wildlife refuge.

2. Urban Sight-Seeing

The Midwest is home to several major cities, all of which offer hundreds of opportunities for those of us more inclined to the hustle and bustle.

Chicago is, of course, one of the largest cities in the United States, and home to many sights and adventures, such as Millenium Park, the Willis Tower Skydeck, and tons of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes.

St. Louis is another popular destination, with excellent dining, and paddleboat river tours. And of course, one of the most famous landmarks in the Midwest: the Gateway Arch.

3. The Indy 500

If high-octane thrills are more your speed, Indianapolis is famous for hosting the Indy 500.

It is also home to the Motor Speedway Museum, which is both fun and educational.

Finally, if you’ve always wanted to get behind the wheel of a race car, you can book an Indy Racing Experience beforehand and drive a real Indy car!

4. Fairs and Festivals

It wouldn’t be the Midwest without some kind of fair. Each state hosts its own annual State Fair, with each one boasting its own unique twist.

There are also many smaller festivals that are worth seeing, such as the National Cherry Festival in Traverse City, Michigan, or the Tulip Festival in Pella, Iowa.

5. Historical Experiences

If you want to really dig in and experience life during a different era, there are ample opportunities across the Midwest.

Kansas is home to several dude ranches that give you the opportunity to work a real-life cattle drive, for example.

Ohio and Indiana are home to vibrant Amish communities that run bed and breakfasts or give tours of their farms.

Finally, one of the stranger but most interesting historical experiences is the Victorian House Museum in Millersburg, Ohio. This is a 28-room house that has been fully restored and decorated and is open for tours.
