A highway accident in Mexico has claimed at least 21 lives in a fiery multi-vehicle collision on the highway connecting Oaxaca and Puebla.
According to reports, the disaster occurred when a cement truck attempted to overtake another vehicle and veered into the opposite lane. The truck slammed into a bus and a transport van before plunging into a ravine and bursting into flames. It was a tragic accident but an unpredictable one.
In a social media post, Puebla Interior Minister Samuel Aguilar said the accident involved three vehicles and that an unspecified number of people were being treated for injuries.
Mexico’s highways have long been a death trap, with steep, winding roads and reckless driving turning them into graveyards on asphalt. Just two months ago, 11 people died when a bus flipped over in Oaxaca. Also, a catastrophe in 2023 resulted in 29 lives lost when a bus plunged into a ravine in the southern state.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. But until Mexico takes real action to fix its treacherous roads and enforce stricter driving laws, there will be reports on tragedies like this.
