Wednesday, an explosion near a police station near the Syrian capital killed one officer and injured four others, according to state media.
The reports, citing the Interior Ministry, did not provide any additional information about the detonation in the town of Barzeh, which is located just north of Damascus. Initially, only five injured officers were reported.
Photos of an incinerated vehicle were distributed by the state news agency SANA to investigators who were assessing the damage.
According to a police source cited by a pro-government radio station, the automobile that exploded was a “private vehicle.” No group claimed culpability for the explosion immediately.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor located in Britain, reported that the explosion was the result of a targeted attack and that seven officers were injured, some in critical condition.
The explosion occurs as Syrian President Bashar Assad makes advances toward restoring relations with the Arab world. Sunday, following a 12-year suspension, Syria was readmitted to the Arab League.
Tuesday marked the announcement of the reopening of diplomatic missions by the Syrian and Saudi foreign ministries.
