The revolutionary invention of the first toothpaste tube features a dentist from New London. Discover all the virtues of Dr. Sheffield’s Natural Toothpaste, made with certified natural ingredients and great taste.

This toothpaste ranks among the most popular oral hygiene products, especially in the United States, where it’s recognised as a premium product. Yet,many people don’t know that the credit for this modern dental care staple belongs to renowned American dentist Washington Sheffield. Over 150 years ago, he patented the first-ever toothpaste in a tube in his New London, Connecticut practice.

In 1870, he created the first non-powder toothpaste with a pleasant taste, marking a true revolution. The tube not only offered a practical alternative from the start but also proved far more hygienic than the jars commonly used to hold powdered toothpaste.

Dr. Sheffield’s brand was relaunched by Sheffield Pharmaceuticals in 2017, with production localized at the historic New London facility, where they continue to replicate the traditional recipe.

How did the first modern toothpaste come about?

The pioneer of modern toothpaste was Dr. Washington Sheffield, a dentist, inventor, and entrepreneur from southeastern Connecticut, born in 1827. After graduating from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery, he opened his first practice and quickly became one of the most respected dental surgeons in the country.

In 1870, he had the ingenious idea of replacing the powder used for oral hygiene with a mint-flavored paste. The idea of packaging the new toothpaste in collapsible tubes came from his son, Dr. Lucius T. Sheffield, who saw artists in Paris using similar tubes for their paints. Together, they revolutionized the dental industry. In 1881, they registered the trademark for the first toothpaste sold in the USA: “Dr. Sheffield’s Crème Angelique Toothpaste.”

Natural ingredients and sustainable packaging

What makes Dr. Sheffield’s toothpaste so special is its original recipe, crafted in 1870 using natural and naturally derived ingredients with minimal processing. The formula is free from synthetic preservatives, detergents, foaming agents, artificial colors, and other potentially toxic ingredients.

Each Dr. Sheffield’s Natural Toothpaste is fluoride-free, cruelty-free, and certified by the Natural Products Association (NPA) and the Leaping Bunny Program. It is also Non-GMO Project Verified, ensuring it contains no genetically modified ingredients.

All Dr. Sheffield’s toothpaste is packaged in sustainable 100% BPA-free aluminum, reflecting the brand’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
