Former England midfielder Darren Ambrose believes Chelsea is currently closing the gap on Manchester City following the signing of Raheem Sterling.
Chelsea announced the signing of Raheem Sterling on a five-year deal for £ 47 million. The England international becomes Chelsea’s major signing of the summer transfer.
The next to follow Raheem Sterling to Stamford Bridge is 31-year-old Napoli and Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly, who is joining the west London club for £40 million. Chelsea is also closing on Manchester City Nathan Ake after agreeing on personal terms with the Dutch international.
There are also reports that Chelsea is negotiating with Paris Saint Germain for French international Presnel Kimpembe. Thomas Tuchel is a long-time admirer of Presnel Kimpembe after the two worked together during his time at Paris Saint Germain.
However, Darren Ambrose believes with the arrival of more signings will close the gap between Chelsea and Manchester after the Blues finished 19 points behind the Premier League champions last season. He also added that Raheem Sterling is a fantastic signing and will improve the Chelsea attack.
What did Darren Ambrose say?
The former England midfielder said via talkSPORT, saying: “It’s a fantastic signing.
“I’m actually shocked that Manchester City has allowed this to happen and go to potentially a rival.
“The more signings Chelsea make the closer they get to Manchester City.
“It’s an outstanding deal for Chelsea. He’s massively underrated, he’s got a fantastic record in my opinion, and does great for England. He’s going to massively improve the attack for Chelsea.
“He’s only 27 as well. He’s committed long-term by signing a five-year deal… it’s a brilliant signing for Chelsea.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea player of the year Mason Mount Believes Chelsea needs to improve in every department of the game next season.
Speaking via Skysports he said: “Every single season you want to do more.
“You want to win more so for me personally setting higher goals and us a team we won two good trophies last season and it could have been four. So we want to step up and keep going. We’re a team and club that win things with that winning mentality. I can definitely see us pushing on and wanting to be successful next season.
“You have to be so on it every single game. It’s 100 points to win the league and even then it’s very tight and coming down to the last game. It’s very difficult and that’s why it’s the best league in the world. You want to play in that competition, you want to have those battles with the teams that are up there. That’s what makes the games against those teams so big. We have to be ready for that.”
Chelsea will play their first pre-season match on Saturday against Club America. The blues will hope they have a better pre-season and prepare adequately for next season in their quest to win their first Premier League title since 2016.
The Blues will start their Premier League campaign with a tricky trip to Everton at Goodison Park, a venue Chelsea is yet to win a match in their last seven attempts.
