Patience is a skill that Chicago Cubs supporters possess. You don’t go through 108 seasons of the greatest championship drought in North American sports history (1908–2016) without knowing how to handle setbacks.
With an 83-79 record and a fourth consecutive missed postseason, the Cubs had another lacklustre season, although Chicago’s 35,949 average home attendance was sixth best in Major League Baseball.
Left fielder Ian Happ threw a ball wrapped in $100 dollars to the left bleachers on Sunday to thank the Cubs fans. The gesture commemorated the season-ending game, which saw the Cincinnati Reds defeat Chicago 3-0 in a shutout.
Happ wrote on the ball: “I appreciate your support this season! I’m drinking beer for the left-field crew!
“(Ian Happ) just tossed this ball to us with some $$ to buy our section some drinks for the last game of the year!” the Bleacher Bums Instagram page wrote in addition to sharing the action. The group describes itself as a fan page for the left-field bleachers at Wrigley Field. What a kind person! Cheers, Ian!”
Since joining the Cubs in 2017, Happ has shown his affection for the Chicago fans. The two-time Gold Glove winner sent Cubs superfan “Bleacher Jeff” a ball wrapped in cash last season.
After a walk in Sunday’s game against Cincinnati, the left fielder went 0-4 overall. With the score knotted at zero after strong beginnings from Hunter Greene and Caleb Kilian at the mound, extra innings were needed at Wrigley Field.
Elly De La Cruz eventually got the Reds on the board with a two-run triple in the top of the tenth inning. Tyler Stephenson then singled in De La Cruz to give Cincinnati a 3-0 lead.
De La Cruz finishes the regular season with an MLB-high 67 runs stolen, having also stolen two bases during the game.
“The seasons are holy. Cubs manager Craig Counsell later stated, “You don’t take them for granted,” as reported by MLB.com. “We’re lucky and blessed to get opportunities, to get to wear the uniform,” I said to the team. Thus, there is unquestionably a bitter aftertaste when you fall short of your aspirations.
