Can Sertraline Help With Premature Ejaculation?
SHARE

Sex is meant to be an intimate time between two people. Few things can ruin the mood like having premature ejaculation cut the festivities short. The situation is far from being a hopeless one, though. Some medications can be effective for men suffering from premature ejaculation. Dr. Laurence Levine discusses some studies that show sertraline can increase ejaculation time for men.

Used For More Than Regulating Emotions

When people think of sertraline, otherwise known as Zoloft, they tend to envision people taking it for a variety of mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression. The idea of taking it for something like premature ejaculation might not have occurred to them. That’s how a lot of medications work, though. Researchers might have been developing a certain drug and noticed that it can help in other ways.

For example, the manufacturers of Viagra initially intended to have it be used for the treatment of angina, which is a condition that affects the heart. Research showed that the little blue pill was much more effective at helping men who suffered from erectile dysfunction. To bring this back to Zoloft, or sertraline, there were studies that showed that men could have more time in bed before ejaculating after taking it.

An Off-Label Prescription

When doctors prescribe this for something to be used for anything other than its original purpose, this is known as an off-label prescription. That means that if someone gets sertraline for premature ejaculation, they are getting it off-label since they are not going to be taking it for any mental health disorders. It’s important to get a doctor’s OK, because certain dosages are right for different heights and weights. That means that it’s a bad idea for someone to try to take a friend or family member’s pills.

Using a Side Effect for Your Benefit

One of the main things about prescription medications is that there are almost always side effects. When someone flips through a magazine and sees ads for prescription medications, there’s usually an entire page devoted to things that can happen to people who take it. The symptoms can range from anything from headaches to feeling sweaty to having stomach issues. When it comes to sertraline, one of the side effects can be a delayed orgasm for me. That means that men can have intercourse for a longer period of time.

The Larger the Dose, the More Time Before Ejaculation

According to a 1998 study, people were given doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg. The men who took the lower dose had an improvement time of six more minutes while the largest dose saw their time increase by 15 minutes. There were side effects in some of the men. They ranged from not being able to ejaculate at all to feeling faint or dizzy. As previously mentioned, that might have been a normal side effect.

Also, men who took sertraline and then stopped saw their premature ejaculation issues return within six months. One of the better ways to manage that was to treat it like an on-demand drug, like Viagra. Men who took it four hours before trying to have intercourse had better results than those who took the medication daily. When they did that, they tended to have fewer side effects than those who took it regularly.

Handling Premature Ejaculation

The best course of action for people who are affected by premature ejaculation is to talk with a medical professional. They will be able to discuss all aspects of what they are going through. There may be other things that they can change, like getting out of a stressful job or moving to a less stressful area of the city or suburb that they are living in.

Premature ejaculation can be something that causes a lot of issues and leaves people feeling unhappy. Fortunately, in these modern times, there are a lot of ways to handle it, including with medication. It doesn’t have to be a one-thing solution, either. They can combine things like sertraline and activities like meditation or exercise. Doing this will bridge the gap between the mind and body and allow people to have pleasure without worrying about it ending too quickly.

Speaking of exercises, there are ones that people can do discreetly anytime and anyplace. One of them is known as Kegel exercises. When people have to interrupt the flow of their urine, they have to use their Kegel muscles to do that. Men can do these exercises while driving — they pretend to stop peeing and hold it for 30 seconds at a time. A good start is to do five sets of ten repetitions.

As time goes by and those Kegel muscles get stronger, that can help people keep from ejaculating too soon. If they feel like the semen is about to come out, they can squeeze those muscles and hold it off until they are truly ready to finish.

In the past, premature ejaculation was something embarrassing that could affect how a person lived their life. It could lead to strained relationships, and even resentment on both ends, since their partner would also be unsatisfied due to the premature ejaculation. Sertraline could be promising, though people are also trying to think about natural lifestyle changes that could also have good benefits.

The main goal is to have a happy, healthy sex life. People should explore every viable option that will leave both parties feeling satisfied. That will make all the work worth it.

Natural PCOS Treatments to Overcome this Condition Forever Did you know? 1 in 5 Indian women suffer from PCOS. While it has become a common occurrence, it puts you through a lot more than you can handle. Anyone who has Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) goes through a rollercoaster of emotions each day. Acne, obesity, facial hair and irregular periods are just a few ways in which PCOS impacts the life of a woman. Besides this, women suffering from PCOS go through a lot of mental stress. Popping one pill after the other might seem like the solution but unfortunately it is doing more harm to your body than good. Top gynaecologists and experts recommend that the best way to control PCOS is by taking a natural route. Although the condition cannot be cured, the symptoms can be managed successfully by resorting to natural PCOS treatments. Through this blog, we aim at discussing all the steps you can take to heal yourself naturally from PCOS. 6 Tried-and-Tested Natural Treatments for PCOS • Cut Down on your Sugar Consumption One factor that contributes immensely to insulin resistance is consuming too much sugar. When you have PCOS, your body cannot handle even the slightest spike in your blood sugar levels. Increased sugar intake makes your body more insulin resistant. This further results in weight gain, worsened acne, hair loss and reduced fertility. If you want to treat PCOS naturally, the first step is to cut sugar out of your diet till your insulin response goes back to normal. Completely eliminate pastries, cakes, chocolates, soft drinks, cereals and processed foods from your diet. If you choose natural sugars in the form of a fruit, try to pair it with a healthy protein or fat source. For example, pair an apple with some almond butter. The trick is to have well-balanced meals. If you’re someone who is addicted to sugar, switch to natural alternatives such as stevia. It has a minimal impact on blood sugar levels but still tastes sweet (1). • Exercise Regularly Obesity is one major side-effect of PCOS. The cysts that develop around your ovaries are usually fat and your body takes longer to metabolise them. The only way to get rid of the extra fat is by exercising regularly. It helps in lowering the insulin levels and keeping the blood sugar levels low. When we say exercise, we don’t mean it has to be strenuous. Even a 30 minute walk or run is a good way to burn excess calories. For a sportsperson, swimming and light aerobics also helps. No matter what exercise you choose, make sure you’re consistent. Gradually lowering your insulin could also help with infertility issues. • Say no to Intermittent Fasting If you’re someone who is suffering from PCOS or any other hormonal imbalance, try to stay away from fads like intermittent fasting. Going without food for long periods is said to worsen the condition and can interfere with the normal hormonal balance.Instead of doing a rigid fast, consider a gentle fast. Keep a 10-12 hour eating window. Your last meal (dinner) should be by 6pm and your breakfast the next day by 8am. This pattern of eating gives your body enough time without the need to produce insulin. When the window between your last meal and first meal is longer than this, irregular ovulation occurs and might even make you feel bloated. Thus, eating at a particular time is a natural way to cure PCOS. • Avoid Consuming High Glycaemic Foods As already discussed, PCOS is caused due to hormonal imbalances and when the body becomes insulin resistant. The best way to prevent PCOS or reduce its symptoms is by having a healthy and timely diet. As far as possible, avoid foods that have a high glycaemic index. Certain foods that fall into this category include processed foods, sugary beverages, grains and potatoes. Instead, foods with a low glycaemic index should be consumed. Cabbage, broccoli, beans, lentils, seeds, mustard leaves, ghee, whole grains and vegetables are great to balance hormones(2). • Join MyAva's Discussion Community PCOS may be complicated but with the right support, even the most arduous journey can be simplified. To address all your PCOS-related problems, you can even join MyAva’s discussion community. They have six-month PCOS program that comprises tips and expert-backed advice that will make you feel good about yourself. Besides this, you get access to live workouts, personalised diet plans, and regular sessions with the best nutritionists, gynaecologists and mental health coaches. The community comprises 25,000 strong women and is growing every day. • Make Special Diet Inclusions Apart from making modifications in your regular diet, consider adding special inclusions too. Ayurveda is an important component of natural PCOS treatments. It is a holistic approach towards managing PCOS. Many ingredients used in Ayurveda can control insulin and blood-sugar levels. For example, start your morning with bitter gourd juice. Research suggests it has a proven effect in controlling blood sugar. Indian gooseberry can be had as an alternative. Another way to keep your hormonal balance and weight intact is by consuming hot water with honey and lemon juice every morning on an empty stomach. Most nutritionists swear by this and recommend it to all women irrespective of whether they have PCOS or not(3). Medicines and supplements are not the only way to cure PCOS. Though the condition cannot be cured permanently, it can always be controlled. Natural treatments and home remedies are the best way to keep PCOS at bay. The simplest way to fight PCOS is by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising daily and getting enough sleep. If you follow this regularly, you’ve already won half the battle.
