According to NBC South Florida, a 14-year-old kid jogging a 5K in Florida fell and died after experiencing cardiac arrest on Saturday.
When police arrived during the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) 5K at Everglades High School in Miramar, Florida, they discovered the adolescent in cardiac arrest, according to a statement.
Doctors pronounced the kid deceased once he arrived at Memorial Miramar Hospital. The student has not been named officially by police.
According to a GoFundMe page, the student was Knox MacEwen, who participated in the JROTC program at Western High School in Davie, Florida, and served in the kids’ ministry at his church. His mother, Julie, just died of cancer, and the family is still dealing with the physical and financial consequences of her sickness, according to the GoFundMe page.
“The family has been through the unimaginable,” according to the GoFundMe page, which adds that the cash donated would “allow Knox’s parents, Kevin and Julie, to take time off work to grieve.”
Grief counselors will be available at Western High School for students who require assistance.
“I am deeply saddened to inform you of tragic news affecting our Wildcat community.” After being transferred to the hospital, one of our JROTC students died this morning. “I want to express my heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones, teachers, and classmates as they mourn this great loss,” Western High School administrator Jimmy Arrojo said in a statement. “I ask our Wildcat community to rally around the family in prayer and support during this time of deep sorrow.”
