Since Matthew Roby’s arrest in 2021, the state of Florida has not permitted him to practice law there in any capacity. This includes the role of an attorney.
The Florida attorney who was sentenced to prison for stealing millions of dollars from a grandmother who was 108 years old has been identified by the state’s attorney general as the perpetrator.
Winter Park attorney Matthew Roby will begin his sentence of five years in jail this week after reaching a plea agreement with the prosecutors and protecting Helen Kuhn’s interests in the case.
The investigators have grounds for believing that he obtained power of attorney over Kuhn by unethical means and then stole three million dollars from her bank accounts after he had it.
“Roby agreed to a plea deal today that would send him to prison for 5 years for Exploitation of an Elderly Person and Grand Theft of over $100,000,” according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Kuhn, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 108, was said to have been outraged for many years by the deception committed by the Ponzi scheme, according to several accounts.
