An Arizona woman was taken into custody one month ago on charges of abandoning her elderly and sightless dog on the side of the road, as reported by the authorities.

An animal cruelty and neglect complaint has been brought against a 62-year-old man from Phoenix who was detained, according to a statement released by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office. According to a representative for the sheriff’s office who spoke with USA TODAY, the female suspect was given a ticket and then allowed to go free.

On August 26, Sheriff Mark Dannels of Cochise County, Arizona, and his wife Nickie saw the dog in Benson, which is located around 45 miles southeast of Tucson.

The dog was eventually taken into custody by an animal control officer from the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office. According to the authorities, the couple had the dog secured in their vehicle before the officer arrived.

The animal control officer noticed that the dog has a microchip, and further investigation revealed that the dog’s last known owner had resided in Maricopa County. The officers said that they had made many attempts to get in touch with the person who owned the property, but they had not received any response.

On September 6, when Sheriff Dannels and Sergeant Ray McNeely were attending a community event in Phoenix, they picked up where they left off with their investigation and attempted to locate the owner of the dog by utilizing her most recent known address.

They were successful in locating the owner of the property, who lives in the central part of Phoenix, thanks to their efforts.

After first denying that she was in Cochise County, the owner is said to have later admitted to dumping her dog on Interstate 10 without informing authorities and ignoring their attempts to get in contact with her.

According to the police, the woman has been issued a court date for later this month in Cochise County to address this claim. The court date will take place in Cochise County. On the other hand, they did not give any kind of timetable.

The animal will stay in the care of the shelter until the conclusion of the legal proceeding.
