According to Israeli and Egyptian authorities, at least two Israelis and one Egyptian were murdered Sunday when an Egyptian police officer opened fire on Israeli tourists in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.
According to a statement issued by Egypt’s Ministry of Interior, the attack on the Pompey’s Pillar monument in Alexandria injured another person. It didn’t provide any fresh information.
According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the victim was a moderately injured Israeli national. The ministry said in a statement that the Israeli government was collaborating with the Egyptian authorities to securely repatriate Israeli people.
According to Egyptian television source Extra News, which has deep ties to Egyptian security forces, the suspected attacker was apprehended. According to reports, the dead Egyptian worked as a tour guide.
Security agents quickly cordoned off the area where the event occurred. A graphic video of two unconscious people resting on the ground was circulated on the internet. A group of men were seen aiding another person. A woman’s voice was heard calling for an ambulance.
On social media, users’ reactions to the situation differed. Some have cheered and others have denounced the killing of innocent tourists in Alexandria.
Ibrahim Issa, a well-known Egyptian novelist and TV personality, declared on X (formerly Twitter) that the attack was a “terrorist crime” and that any attempt to justify it “is a crime against humanity and the nation.”
Amr Magdi of Human Rights Watch came out against the event, telling X that there is “no justification whatsoever for intentionally targeting Israeli civilians in #Egypt, Gaza, or anywhere else.”
The US embassy in Cairo has cautioned Americans in Egypt to be on the lookout following an event that may have been related to clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinian militants.
Egypt was the first Arab country to make peace with Israel in the 1970s, and it has served as a mediator between Israel and Palestine ever since. However, when violence between Israelis and Palestinians escalates, anti-Israeli sentiment reaches lethal proportions.
