One passenger, identified as Vishwashkumar Ramesh, survived the crash of an Air India plane, Flight AI171, bound for London that killed at least 260 people on Thursday, including bystanders as it crashed into a college hostel.
Officials said this was one of India’s worst airline disasters in decades.
Among the victims include medical students who were in a college hostel when the plane hit the building shortly after takeoff, said Vidhi Chaudhary, a top state police officer in the northwestern city. “Most of the bodies have been charred beyond recognition,” she added.

Indian Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed that a single passenger survived the crash and said he met him at the hospital.
Dr. Dhaval Gameti said, “the survivor was disoriented with multiple injuries all over his body. But he seems to be out of danger.” The man told Indian media he heard a loud noise shortly after Flight AI171 took off.
