Mayra Flores, a Republican from Texas, will make history when she becomes the first woman to serve in Congress who was born in Mexico.
Flores was victorious over the Democrat Dan Sanchez on Tuesday’s ballot in a special election, and he will now serve as the representative for the Rio Grande Valley.
She said on Twitter that she had woken up this morning and everything that had occurred in the previous twenty-four hours was still making her feel “weird.”
The Democrats had held on to their majority in the South Texas district ever since it was created in 2012, making this defeat a significant setback for the party.
Earlier on in this year, Flores won a seat in the House of Representatives after working previously as a respiratory therapist.
Flores defines herself as a Republican who is “pro-life, pro-family, and pro-life” and is a supporter of Former President Donald Trump.
When she found out that Elon Musk, a self-made billionaire, had voted for her, the newly elected congressman had something to say about it. The creator of Tesla noted that this election was his first time voting for a candidate from the Republican party.
She made the statement that the support from Elon Musk was “the icing on top.” She expressed her excitement by saying, “I can’t wait to work with his team.”
